1. Emjoi AP-18 Emagine 72 Tweezer Head Epilator Review

Dual Opposed 72 Tweezer Head Epilator

If you want to get serious about your hair removal, then you want the Emjoi Ap-18 Emagine Dual Opposed 72 Tweezer Head Epilator. I made the switch about six months ago, and I will never go back to waxing (or using any other epilator, for that matter). Why? First of all, it removes hair in only a pass or two with 72 tweezers. Dual staggered heads let you cover more area while exclusive lifting fingers help reduce those annoying ingrown hairs. With its patented glide technology, all those little hairs are lifted up, allowing the machine to work without irritating your skin.
To make sure that your skin stays as healthy as possible, this epilator comes with silver ion technology. Don’t ask me how it works; I just know that it does! The ergonomic handle makes it easy and comfortable to use for long periods of time. There’s a dual speed control, which lets you choose how much juice you want in each situation. There’s also no worrying about batteries running out halfway through: plug-in operation means there’s a consistent power level throughout. All in all, it’s a fantastic epilator that leaves all other forms of hair removal in the dust.

  • Covers a Large Area: This machine is designed to take up less of your time than other epilators. I have lots of thick, dark hair, so I’m used to devoting a large part of my beauty routine to hair removal. However, because the Emagine’s staggered heads cover so much area. I don’t have to go over each square inch seventeen times, greatly reducing the amount of time I have to spend epilating.
  • Dual Speed Control: I love this. There are just some areas you don’t want to approach full force (underarms and bikini line comes to mind…), but going at a slow speed on legs and arms just takes forever. Being able to control the speed with which the epilator moves means I can customize it to each situation. This makes it more comfortable and efficient to use.
  • Picks Up Lots of Hairs: In the past, I’ve had epilators that seemed to miss every other hair. While you’ll never get every hair removed in one go, I’ve found that the Emagine has a very high success rate. Most of that has to do with the number of tweezers. While 72 tweezers do make the experience a little more, well, uncomfortable, it does leave legs feeling smoother and results in less time spent doing touch-ups.
  • Doesn’t Irritate Skin: The people who designed this device put time into making sure your skin looks great afterward. Ingrown hairs are a common problem of mine when I epilate, but I haven’t had much of an issue with this device. The same goes for those little red bumps that tend to crop up after hair removal. The problem isn’t solved completely, but again, I have a much higher success rate with this device than others.

  • No Battery Option: I don’t like having a cord trailing behind me as I epilate, but with the Emagine, I don’t have a choice. I understand why it has to be this way, though. It’s a powerful machine, so it would most likely drain a battery pretty fast. Because it’s so powerful, I spend less time using it, so I can deal with using the cord for such a short amount of time.
  • Makes Some Noise: This isn’t a quiet machine. Depending on your tolerance for the noise this may or may not bother you. If you have roommates or family around it may bother them more than you, so keep that in mind.

I’ve seen a lot of epilators in my line of work (I’m a fashion stylist), and I have to say Emjoi Emagine is one of the best. It works quickly and efficiently without causing undue pain. It’s easy to use, and I love the dual speed control. It can be used to sensitive where other epilators can’t go. It’s a high-quality device that does everything you could hope for. If you’re sick of shaving or dealing with a subpar epilator, it’s time to trade up. I’m glad I did.Buy From Amazon

2. Emjoi Soft Caress Hair Remover Review – A Fantastic and Cute Cordless Epilator

Emjoi Soft Caress Epilator

I fell in love with the Emjoi Soft Caress Cord/Cordless Hair Remover. It has everything a girl could want from an epilator. The 24 karat gold-plated tweezer discs remove hair quickly and effectively – no stubble left behind with this one! I’m pretty used to pain from hair removal, but I’ve found that the pain reduction technology and massaging finger attachment do make a difference.

It’s ergonomically designed, meaning it’s comfortable to use for as long as I need to (and I’ll admit sometimes that’s a lot). I use it everywhere, including legs, arms, underarms, and bikini line. It can be used cordless, or with a 110V adaptor.

The package even comes with a carrying pouch, meaning if I need to travel with it I can. It’s a solid, efficient device that’s been keeping my legs silky and stubble free for the past year. I love it!

  • Cord or Cordless: One of my pet peeves with epilators is when you don’t have an option to go cordless. I can’t stand being glued to a wall whenever I want to epilate. Thankfully, the Emjoi Soft Caress can be used either way. If I’m expecting to use it a long time, I can plug it in halfway through, but if it’s just a touch up I don’t have to worry about dealing with cords. I can use it. However I want.
  • Pain Reduction Technology: I’ve recommended this device to friends who are just getting started with epilators. The pain reduction technology found in this device (and all of Emjoi’s epilators) helps reduce the discomfort that comes from this form of hair removal. While it will never be pain-free (you are pulling out hairs, after all!), the experience with this device is much more bearable than what I’ve seen with others.
  • Useful Everywhere: Not all epilators can go all places, but this one can. It makes short work of legs, underarms, and bikini lines (although I wouldn’t recommend going straight to that last area if you’re a beginner). I’ve also heard that it works beautifully for individual hairs on the face.
  • Ergonomic Design: I’ve been blessed (ha ha) with thick dark hair that seems to grow back overnight. Because of this, I spend a lot of quality time with my epilators. The ergonomic design of the Emjoi Soft Caress means that no matter how much time I have to spend on hair removal, I stay comfortable.

  • Can Catch Skin: I’ve noticed with this particular epilator that it can catch at the skin if it’s not pulled tight. Depending on your skin type this may or may not be a problem for you. It’s always a good idea to pull the skin tight around the area you’re working on. It’s not painful when it catches, but it may slow you down a bit.
  • Takes a Little While: Speaking of slowing you down, don’t expect to be done removing all your hair in a few minutes. It takes some time to get everything taken care of with this machine. You may have to go over the same area a few times (I know I do). But the results are worth it – soft, silky, hair-free skin that feels amazing.

I don’t know where I’d be without my Emjoi Soft Caress. It keeps my skin hair free and soft without it being too painful to use. I love that I can use it in all parts of my body and that I can choose whether I want to plug it in or go cordless. It’s easy to hold, easy to use, and it’s even quieter than many other epilators. It’s everything a girl could want in a hair removal device. If you’re looking for a more effective option than shaving, waxing or tweezing, you’ll love this little machine.Buy From Amazon

3. Braun 5270 Silk-épil X’elle Body System Epilator with Massage Roller Review

Braun Epilator Silk-epil

Braun S270 X’elle Body System Epilator is my favorite beauty tool. Epilators remove hairs at the root instead of shaving them off halfway through, leaving you with smoother and silkier skin. The X’elle uses 40 tweezers to remove hair with little discomfort quickly. The active massagers that are built into the machine stimulate your skin before and after hair are removed, reducing discomfort. There’s a built-in spotlight that highlights any missed hairs. If you don’t feel like epilating on a particular day, the unit comes with a shaver head and OptiTrim attachment to trim and maintain your skin. There are two speeds on the epilator, allowing you to remove hair at your own pace. It’s well designed, comfortable to hold, and has reduced the amount of time and money I spend on waxing and shaving.

  • High Number of Tweezers: Many other epilators I’ve come across have about twenty tweezers on their heads. The X’elle has double that, which means it works a lot more quickly. I don’t have much time to spare, so being able to work smarter makes my routine go along that much more smoothly.
  • Smartlight: I just love this smart light. It highlights so many hairs that I had no idea existed. I’ve found strays on the inside of my knee, on my hands, and even on my toes. It makes me that much more confident that I’m getting a great shave whenever I use this machine.
  • Active Massagers: I’m used to the discomfort that goes hand in hand with hair removal, but I was surprised at how little using this machine hurt. I’m sure it has a lot to do with the active massagers. Having the skin soothed after the hair is plucked is a great way to go, especially if you’re not used to how epilators can feel.
  • Includes a Shaver Head: Sometimes you just don’t feel like using an epilator. I get that way sometimes, so having the option to switch to a shaver head is a huge bonus for me. It’s easy to switch out the heads, and both the shaver and the trimmer work very well. While they don’t get my legs quite as smooth as the epilator does, they’re a great alternative on a once in a while basis.

  • Cord Could Be Longer: I’m not overly impressed with the length of the cord. It’s so short that you have to sit right up next to the wall to use it comfortably. However, it’s not too difficult to just attach an extension cord to it, which is what I usually end up doing.
  • Not for Sensitive Skin: I have a pretty high tolerance for hair plucking, but if you haven’t had experience with waxing before you may find this epilator a little too much for you. The active massagers do make it more comfortable than other epilators, though, and if you give it a try at a low speed right after a hot shower, the pain shouldn’t be too bad.

I’d much rather use an epilator than shave every day, and the X’elle lets me do just that. The forty tweezers make short work of the hair on my legs, arms, and bikini area. I love having a light that shows me any hairs I missed, and the additional shaver head is great for when I’m in a rush. It’s a high-quality device that removes hair with less pain than many epilators. If you’re sick of shaving every day and want a longer lasting solution, you’ll love this device.Buy From Amazon

4. Epilady Legend Rechargeable Epilator Review

Epilady Legend 4th Generation Rechargeable Epilator

This is a great way to remove unwanted hair all over the body. The 40 tweezer discs give up to 32,000 tweezes a minute, so it’s easy to see it’s quick. It even removes short and fine hairs, which leaves skin smoother and silkier.

The results last up to four weeks (although with me it was more like three). It has two operating speeds, which means I can choose exactly how much oomph I want in any situation. It’s ergonomically designed with rubber touch at gripping points, making it comfortable no matter how long it’s used.

It comes with a carrying case, adaptor, and cleaning brush to make sure that you get the most out of it. All in all, it’s a fantastic choice for removing unwanted hair quickly and efficiently.

  • 40 Tweezer Discs: I hate spending hours trying to get rid of every unwanted hair. The number of tweezers the Epilady Legend comes with means that I don’t have to block off huge amounts of time. The device works quickly, grabbing even tiny hairs in record time.
  • Dual Operating Speeds: When I first used this epilator I made the mistake of going full speed on my underarms. I don’t have to tell you it wasn’t very comfortable. From that point on I used the slower speed on more sensitive areas and the faster speed on my legs. I love having the option to use the speed that works for me, instead of having to stick to what the machine decides.
  • Long Battery Life: I love that this machine can go cordless, and I especially love that the battery lasts a long time. This lets me use it for as long as I need to without having to worry about the machine slowing down or having to wrestle with cords and outlets. In fact, I’ve even been able to take it on trips and never touch the adaptor. This saves on a lot of time and frustration both at home and on the road.
  • Ergonomically Designed: If you’re like me and tend to spend a lot of time on hair removal, you want to be comfortable. The Epilady Legend is designed for those of us who’ll be holding onto it for a while. The rubber grips are comfortable, and the whole thing fits nicely in my hand. I feel like I could use it for a very long time and not get tired of it.

  • Is Not Pain-Free: Let’s be honest here: plucking hairs out of your skin will never be comfortable. The Epilady Legend is no exception. Expect some pain and irritation the first few times you use it – I know I had some. I find that taking a shower beforehand (and maybe even popping an aspirin) can help with the pain.
  • May Break Fine Hairs: If your hair is particularly fine you may find that the epilator breaks the hair instead of pulling it out by the roots. I had problems with this from time to time since hair grows back at different rates, but the longer I used the device, the fewer problems I had in this department.

The Epilady Legend is a great choice if you’re tired of shaving or waxing. It’s a very efficient and effective way to remove hair, especially if it’s thick or coarse. It’s comfortable to use, the battery lasts a long time, you can choose how quickly you want it to go, and it has enough tweezers to make the process go relatively quickly. I’d recommend giving it a try if you’re sick of your current hair removal routine.Buy From Amazon

5. Braun SE3170 Silk-épil Soft Perfection Epilator Review

Braun SE3170 Silk-épil 3 SoftPerfection EpilatorThere wasn’t much thought that went into choosing the Braun SE3170 Silk-épil Soft Perfection Epilator; it just happened to be the first pink epilator that I saw. I did read the package and my eye caught onto the words ‘Silky smooth skin,’ and I thought the pink was kinda cute so decided to give this a try.

The rave reviews online helped as well.
The packaging promised that you’d stay silky smooth for up to 4 weeks. They also said it has a moving pain softener and massage rollers that work on the skin before and after hair removal, reducing the painful pulling feeling.

I’m an absolute sissy when it comes to pain, so this sounded like the thing for me. After using it for 5 months, here’s what I can tell you.

  • Firstly, it’s so light! I imagined it would be a little heavier.
  • Smooth, silky skin – absolutely! Unbelievably so, I haven’t felt my legs and arms so smooth since I started shaving. I’m especially happy with my arms which are quite hairy, for a woman, and the hairs are dark. Now
  • I’m not so conscious when I’m wearing sleeveless tops.
In my excitement, I didn’t read the instructions properly and ended up with a few bumps mostly in the upper arms. However, by taking a shower first then drying off and exfoliating, that helped. I’ve not had that problem for more than 3 months now.
  • Initially, the price almost put me off buying this epilator considering that I’ve been using inexpensive razors all my life. But then I realized it’s a cost saving because you don’t have to buy replacement razors every so often.
  • The epilator is a one-time investment.
  • I was scared initially of using it on the bikini line, even though the package says you can. Then one day I gave it a shot. Well, it wasn’t as bad as I expected regarding the pain. It’s a little bit awkward trying to get your leg in the right position to get to all those places. But the results are so worth it.
  • Finally, it’s great that I don’t have to shave every day. I don’t last 4 weeks as they say advertise, but on average 2 ½ to 3 weeks. That’s such a relief especially on mornings I’m running late to work.

  • It’s only configured to work in the US, so I couldn’t take it with me when I went on a work trip to Europe – it was back to shaving again. I hope they can come up come up with a multi-country version.
  • It’s still a painful process, but I’ve found that after a few sessions the pain is more bearable. The one area that still gets very sore is the underarms. So I’ve gone back to shaving the underarms instead of epilating them like I always do.

Final comment, I’ve used the Braun SE3170 for a long time, and it has served me well. Although I’ve switched over to the Braun 5270 Silk Epilator nowadays, I still pull out this pink beauty once in a while to use it. Fantastic epilator that’s worth buying!

6. Braun SE 7181 WD Silk Epil 7 Wet & Dry Epilator Review

Braun SE 7181 WD Silk Epil 7 Wet & Dry Epilator

Braun 7181 Silk-Epil provides the head thing that promises to move around your body contours for really thorough hair control. I love gadgets and this one had a pretty feminine design to it that caught my eye. Slender curves, a white body and subtle tones of pastel pink. It also guaranteed very smooth skin, much longer time in between shaves and softer, finer re-growth. They also said it provided fast and painless hair removal, plus it came with Olay pre-epilation wipes to soften the skin before you start. My experience is as follows:

  • It’s great that the epilator has different power settings. At first, I ignored the beginner cap, to my very painful detriment. But when I used the beginner cap things were a lot more endurable. After about 3 or 4 epilations, I moved onto the efficiency cap which uses the full power. That gives you a fabulous result, with skin that is so hairless and smooth to the touch. It still hurts, but it’s an endurable pain once every two weeks.
  • Not having to shave every day is such a joy. I can usually go two weeks in between shaves. I calculated that’s 26 times a year of epilating instead of 365 days of shaving. Also, my new hair grows back is much finer.
  • I’m glad I picked this epilator because of the pivoting head; it gives you such flexibility around the various corners such as the knees. It’s also quite light to hold and with a good grip.
  • Then I dared to use it on my stomach. You see, I have dark hair but very fair skin, so the hairs on my stomach form this line from my chest to crotch that I’m so conscious of. I gave the Xpressive a try and … yup, it hurt! Oh, but my tummy looks so yummy, so the results are worth the sting.
  • The smart-light is great. Somehow I missed that when reading up on the features before I bought it. So it was a pleasant surprise to find a little flashlight. Suddenly I found hairs in places I thought were hairless.

  • The hair doesn’t grow back at the same rate – they didn’t say that anywhere on the package unless I missed it. My lower leg hairs grow back much faster than the hair my thighs and arms. So then I have to do a shave or two in between while I wait for the rest of the body hairs to catch up with the lower legs. But I recommend it because the long-term results are so worth it and you get the well-deserved break in between epilating.
  • The price almost put me off … a hundred bucks! It’s not a cheap tool by any means, but then I did some quick math and figured that what I spend in shavers and waxing in six months is more than the price of this epilator. I’ve now had it for almost 1 year, and it’s a great buy.

All in all, this is a good epilator that matches with up the famous Braun 5270 and Braun SE3170. But the pivoting head on this one gives this a slight edge when it comes to having complete hair removal. I would recommend this epilator if it’s within your budget.Buy From Amazon

7. Braun SE7281WD Xpressive Body System Rechargeable Wet & Dry Epilator Review

Braun Epilator Silk-épil 7 7-880 Facial Hair Removal

Beauty is a pain. However, with my Braun SE7281WD Xpressive Body System Rechargeable Wet & Dry Epilator, I’ve found I’ve been feeling less pained than usual. I love the smooth, silky feeling that comes from using an epilator, and the massaging system from this device gives me this feeling without a lot of pain.

There are pre-epilation wipes included that help soothes the skin before you begin plucking. It has a pivoting head that matches the curves of my body. It also comes with a built-in smart light that illuminates the small, flat-lying hairs that regular razors miss.

I love its wet/dry technology – it lets me use it in the shower, bath, or without any water whatsoever. My legs feel so lovely every time I use it, and they stay that way for weeks.

  • Pivoting Head: I’m famous for getting out of the bathroom to find huge patches of hair I missed while shaving. These patches usually hide in all those little curves that are so easy to miss. That’s why I love that the Xpressive has a pivoting head. It’s perfect for getting into all those hard to miss areas. It hugs all of your curves, and no hair gets left behind.
  • Built-In Smart Light: Another way the Xpressive makes sure no hair gets left behind is its smart light. This light shines onto all those little hairs you never even knew existed, lighting them up and showing you where to go next. I’ve caught so many stray hairs this way that I was shocked – who knew there was hair on the back of my knee?
  • Rechargeable Battery: Epilators with short, hard to use cords are a pet peeve of mine. This epilator is completely cord-free and comes with a rechargeable battery. It’s easy to just pop it back on the charger after you’re done using it to make sure you’ve got plenty of juice the next time you need it. No cords required.
  • Wet/Dry Technology: I like that I can take this epilator into the shower with me if I want to. I usually don’t (it works much better dry), but I like having the option. What’s even nicer is that it makes cleaning so much easier. Instead of having to worry about hurting any sensitive parts, you can clean it quickly and easily. Much more hygienic this way.

  • A Little Noisy: This is not a silent machine. The head does make some noise as it goes about its business. If you have roommates, it may start to get on their nerves. On the plus side, it removes hair so well that you’ll only have to use it once or twice a month, so you don’t have to put up with the noise for too long!
  • Can’t Be Used on Face: Many epilators have the option of being used on the face, but this one does not. If you need facial hair removal, you’ll have to look for it somewhere else. It’s great for every other area, though.

It’s hard to beat an epilator for hair removal, and as far as epilators go the Xpressive is one of the best. Its massaging system makes hair removal tolerable (nothing could make it comfortable, though!).

The smart light and pivoting head make sure you get every last hair, and the wet/dry technology makes cleaning a whole lot easier. It’s an effective and easy to use epilator that will likely cause you to throw out all your razors. If you’d like to say goodbye to shaving, you’ll love this.

8. Emjoi AP-10LR Light Caress, Cordless / Corded Review

Emjoi AP-10LR Light Caress epilator

I always recommend the Emjoi AP-10LR Light Caress. It’s one of the best for beginners because it’s very gentle. The patented pain reduction technology that it’s equipped with really does its job. At the same time, it’s a very effective way to remove hair.

The 36 tweezers can remove hair as short as 0.5mm. This means that all those little hairs that other epilators leave behind are dealt with, leaving your skin silky and smooth. At the same time, it’s gentle enough to be used on the face.

I like that it has a built-in light to point out any missed hairs, as well as its ability to be used with or without a cord. It’s comfortable to hold and easy to use. All in all, it’s a great introduction to epilating.

  • Just the Right Amount of Tweezers: The number of tweezers you have on an epilator can have a huge effect on your experience. If you have too few, it takes forever to get all the hair removed, but if you have too many, it can be very painful, especially if it’s your first time. The Light Caress’s 36 tweezers are the perfect amount for beginners. You won’t be overwhelmed with too much pain, but it won’t take so long to use that you get frustrated.
  • Pain Reduction Technology: I’ll be straight with you: there will be some pain involved when using this device. You’re plucking hairs out of your skin – it’s going to hurt! However, I’ve found this machine to be more bearable than others. The pain reduction technology does work to lessen the pain. If you’re worried about how it will feel, I’d recommend taking a small dose of pain reliever before you start. And don’t give up! The more you use it, the less discomfort you’ll feel.
  • Built-In Light: I love it when epilators have lights built in. It’s so easy to miss hairs, especially if you’re working in the bikini area, so having a bit of extra illumination can make a huge difference. You’d be surprised at all the little hairs a light like this can pick up, and having it built into the machine means it’s always there without you having to think about it.
  • Both Corded and Cordless: This is a great feature. Everyone has their preferred way to epilate. Personally, I hate having to work with a cord, but at the same time being able to plug it into the wall means you know you’ll be able to get all your hair removal done without the battery dying. Having the option to use either means you can epilate the way that makes you happy.

  • Can’t Turn the Light Off: I love the built-in light, but it would be nice to have the option to turn it on or off. When the machine is on the light is on, so if you’d rather not have it, you’d have to find some way to cover it up. A piece of tape might work. Though, I’d imagine for most people it wouldn’t be too big deal.
  • May Take Too Long for Some: While having 36 tweezers is faster than having 20, using this epilator will probably take longer than using a razor. Make sure you want to put in the time before you pick it up. However, the Light Caress will leave you feeling hair-free for longer, so the overall time commitment will likely be close to or less than what you’d have with a razor.

While epilating isn’t for everyone, I’ve managed to convert many of my friends and clients. If you’re just getting started with this form of hair removal, or if you’re looking for a gentle alternative to your current epilator, I’d recommend the Emjoi Light Caress. The pain reduction technology, corded/cordless capabilities, and built-in light are all great features. While no epilator is pain-free, it is a more comfortable experience than what you’d get with many other epilators. It’s a great place to start epilating, and I’ll continue to recommend it to anyone who asks.Buy From Amazon

How to Use an Epilator

An epilator is an electrical device for removing hair, and it works by grasping/tweezing hair out of the hair roots. All epilators will usually come with usage instructions, but that said, there are some general techniques and tips to know for a successful epilation experience. If you’re new to epilators, you may want to read up about how epilators work and the benefits of epilators as well, it’ll give you some background information on why epilating is such a fantastic hair removal method. Last of all, if you haven’t gotten an epilator yet or want to upgrade to a better model, check out the epilator reviews on this website for more tips on which to choose the best epilator for your needs.

Now let’s look at some of the tips on how to use an epilator well.

How to Prepare for an Epilation Session

Generally, hair removal is better and more comfortable if the skin is warm, hair roots are relaxed, and the pores are wider. Take a warm bath or shower before you epilate. Bathing also removes the dead skin and reduces chances of infection. Then wipe dry your skin very well as epilators don’t work very well on wet hair. Although that said, there are now wet-use epilators available that are waterproof and designed for use in the shower or bath, and on a well-lathered skin. Don’t apply any lotion or ointment before epilating.

Tips on Using the Epilator

For beginners or if you are using a new model of machine, first try it out on an area that’s not too sensitive; lower legs are usually a good place to start. This will get you used to the feeling of epilation. Move in light, slow, rolling strokes. Exerting too much pressure can result in cuts and scratches. Some epilators require straight strokes and others circular strokes; the package instructions will guide you. Furthermore, you must always glide in the opposite direction as the hair growth.

Tightening the skin by lightly stretching it with your free hand prevents the skin pinching under the epilator. This makes for a quicker and less uncomfortable hair removal experience. Some models have different speeds. Always start with the lowest speed until you get used to it before adjusting the speed upwards. Only move into sensitive areas like the underarms and bikini region once you’re comfortable epilating arms and legs.

Occasionally you may experience some redness, irritation, so it’s probably better to epilate in the evening so that your skin has the night to recover. With time, skin irritation tends to decrease. Epilating is painful, but generally, the discomfort also decreases with time. With regular epilation, the hairs grow back more slowly which means you don’t need to epilate as often. If the pain is too uncomfortable, try epilating different areas on different days. Handling an epilator takes a little getting used to, so don’t give up quickly but just keep just practicing.

Cleaning Up After Use

The epilator must be cleaned after each session as hair and bits of skin get left behind on the blade and may lead to infections during your next session. Many brands come with cleaning wipes or brushes, and special epilator solutions are available for purchase.

Moisturizing After Epilating

After epilation, a mild body lotion or toner can be used to sooth the skin. Witch hazel has good soothing properties for post-epilation. Wait a while for your skin to settle before you apply moisturizer, sun screen or deodorant. Also, regularly exfoliate the treated areas with a body buffer or loofa as it greatly helps to reduce incidences of ingrown hairs.

How Do Epilators Work?

Put simply; an epilator is a hair removal device that works by gripping several hairs at once and physically pulling them out. Although epilation is similar to waxing, the two processes differ in that epilation does not result in the loss of cells from epithelium tissue found throughout the body. The best epilator usually does not have parts requiring regular replacement, although if your epilator works by using a spring, this may need replacing periodically.

Several varieties of epilators exist. Epilators vary based on their power source (power cord, rechargeable battery and disposable battery varieties exist) and hair removal method (some remove hair by trapping it in a slowly-rotating coil of wire, and others use small tweezers to pull hair out). Epilators are usually not used over small areas, and are more suited to areas with large amounts of hair, such as the legs or arms, as using a tweezer on smaller amounts of hair may be more efficient.

Epilation devices have evolved rapidly in recent years. The head of a modern device will feature some metal plates melded into plastic. When the head of the epilator rotates, the plates move together and apart, similar to tweezers. Hair caught in between the plates is pulled out as the head of the epilator rotates and is discarded by the epilator immediately, creating an efficient method of epilation allowing for the quick completion of all stages in the hair removal process.

The method of epilation for the face is different to the way epilators are used on the rest of the body. Epilators designed for the face are manually operated and do not use any form of electrical power. Face epilators usually contain just one spring with two handles attached. The spring must firstly be made to form a curve and then placed on the facial hair to be removed. Turning the handles will cause the hair caught between the spring coils to be pulled out.

One issue related with epilation is very similar to a problem experienced by those who wax or shave. If your hair is brittle, it may simply snap rather than be pulled out. Hair that snaps off will look very similar to face stubble experienced by males due to shaving, but unlike face stubble, will not be concentrated in one area as brittle hairs may not be common on your skin. Regular epilation will reduce problems associated with brittle hair, as well as reducing discomfort.

Epilator FAQ

Epilators are a fantastic hair removal tool, but one needs to know how to use it well. Here are some frequently asked questions about epilators and the process of epilating. More questions and answers will be added over time so feel free to bookmark this page or send a friend over! You may also want to read my best epilator tips for more information on using epilators.

1. Do hairs grow back thicker or faster after using an epilator?

No, they do not. Studies have shown that ‘root removal’ methods such as epilation reduce the amount of re-growth and produces thinner hair that grows back more slowly. Hair typically takes about 4 weeks to re-grow back to its original length, but the hair on different places grows back at different rates. You may want to learn more about how epilators work.

2. How do I get rid of a rash from an epilator?

Firstly, stop any hair removal until after it heals. If the rash is mild, you can get some aloe vera which has anti-inflammatory. Another natural antiseptic method is a drop or two of pure tea tree oil in water. You could also try antiseptic creams. If the rash does not clear after a couple of days, see a doctor.

3. Can you use an epilator during pregnancy?

Manual or mechanical methods of body hair removal are all right. However be cautious of what chemical products you might use as part of epilation. Read the package instructions carefully or better still, consult your physician before applying these chemicals. Additionally, keep in mind that maternal stress affects the unborn child negatively. If epilation is particularly uncomfortable, you may want to consider discontinuing or using a less stressful method until post-pregnancy.

4. How long do hairs grow back after using an epilator?

With regular epilation, re-growing hairs become finer, thinner and softer. Eventually, they may stop growing altogether. This is because repeated removal of hair from the roots will alter the follicles enough where they stop producing new hair.

5. How do you avoid getting ingrown hairs while using an epilator?

Ingrown hairs from epilation occur when the cut hairs curls back into the skin, or they get trapped inside the follicle causing inflammation. When epilating, always move in the opposite direction of the hair growth for better tweezing. A warm bath or shower before epilation opens the pores and softens the hair for better epilation.

Exfoliating regularly between epilation also minimizes ingrown hairs by removing dead skin layers and smoothening re-growing hairs. Regular epilation also reduces the occurrence of ingrown hairs as the re-growing hair tends to be smoother and finer.

6. Is using an epilator more painful than waxing?

The general consensus is that waxing and epilating are about the same regarding discomfort and that both methods become more bearable with time. Some users, however, cannot accommodate epilation in the bikini and underarm areas and will opt for other techniques. Epilation is also not popular for the eyebrows. Check out this guide to reducing epilator pain for help on making epilators less painful.

7. How do I clean my epilator?

Begin by sweeping out excess hairs with a brush. Also, brush off the epilator attachments. Gas dusters are also available for purchase, and they are used to blow off leftover hairs after brushing. Wet use epilators can be rinsed under a running tap.

Next, clean off the tweezers and attachments with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Let the epilator dry off before replacing the cap.

8. How should I moisturize after using an epilator?

A soothing or calming lotion is probably the best moisturizer because epilation leaves the skin sore. Witch hazel has soothing properties. Alternatively, you can purchase a post-epilation lotion. Avoid your regular cream or moisturizer until the skin settles down again.

9. Where can I buy epilators?

Epilators can be found in some drugstores and big department stores like Target, Sephora, Bed Bath and Beyond or any other specialty store. You can also buy epilators online through Amazon.com, which usually offers greatly discounted prices compared to the usual retail stores.
